DATO' MAHARAJALELA

DATO' MAHARAJALELA

Perak nasionalist, Dato' Maharajalela is one of the 'Pembesar Delapan' which came from Luwuk District in Sulawesi. Dato Maharajalela was known as Pandak Lam by the locals. He is the son of the Bugis King which is the descendant of Daeng Salili. He came to Perak when Sultan Mudzafar Shah III was on the throne and he was given the title "Dato 'Maharaja Lela Tan Lela" as he was appointed as the 'Mufti' there. he was also granted the permission to decapitate without question.

He died on 20th January 1877 after he was found guilty of assassinating J.W.W Birch who was at that time, appointed as the first British Resident due to the Pangkor deal.

museum in Pasir Salak depicted the moment when Dato' Maharajalela was hanged.  Dato' Maharajalela is seen as a symbol of resistance again British collonialism and he was recognised as the Malay hero by the Malay Nationalist.

Well, hard to break the nice point of the story. According to my readings, there are also sources which said that Dato' Maharajalela was a slave dealer and the Malay Nationalist refuse to admit this fact and they preferred to recognize him as a brave warrior who fought for his belief. the actual fact is still unknown, well not to me as i have limited access to resources. i'll try and look it up some more and i will try and provide the best fact and please do correct me if im wrong

**thank you for reading this entry**
